Saturday Night Live (SNL) has set multiple records at the Primetime Emmy Awards throughout the decades.

As of 2025, it is the most-awarded and most-nominated program in the ceremony’s history, picking up multiple accolades and nods for writing, direction, individual performances, and guest hosting.

Since the Emmys restructured its variety series categories, SNL has struggled to compete with Last Week Tonight with John Oliver. However, its 50th anniversary special may lead to the iconic show picking up the accolade this year.

The 2025 Nominees

Like 2024, only two shows have received a nomination for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series:

  • Saturday Night Live
  • Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

The winner will be announced on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the Peacock Theater in Los Angeles, California.

Saturday Night Live Could Win the Award

Saturday Night Live is no stranger to success at the Primetime Emmy Awards, as it has won 90 Primetime Emmy Awards in its 50-year history.

As a result, it is the most-awarded TV show of all time, winning accolades in many categories, including Outstanding Variety Sketch Series, Outstanding Directing, Outstanding Writing for a Variety Series, and more.

As SNL recently hosted its 50th anniversary special, which was a historic moment on US TV, it could gain an edge over Last Week Tonight with John Oliver in the category.

The star-studded special received many glowing reviews from top TV critics, as it provided audiences with mostly brand-new material instead of montages of past sketches. Also, many praised the show for its musical comedy, including the original song “50 Years” by Adam Sandler.

Its increased popularity may provide fans with more confidence ahead of the ceremony, as it has received a record-breaking 31 nominations in various categories, including Outstanding Directing for a Variety Series, Outstanding Variety Special (Live), and Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series for Bowen Yang.

Due to the show’s incredible milestone and its cultural relevance, many Emmy voters might not hesitate to vote in SNL’s favor for Outstanding Scripted Variety Series this year.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is the Frontrunner

Despite SNL’s success at the Primetime Emmy Awards throughout the decades, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver has been on a seemingly unstoppable winning streak in recent years.

The show first dominated the Outstanding Variety Talk Series category, winning the accolade seven consecutive times, stretching from 2016 to 2022.

However, the variety categories were restructured in 2023, replacing Outstanding Variety Talk Series and Outstanding Variety Sketch Series with Outstanding Talk Series and Outstanding Scripted Variety Series.

As a result, Last Week Tonight with John Oliver was moved to the Outstanding Scripted Variety category, which it has dominated since.

The much-loved late-night talk show won the award in 2023 and 2024, and BEO betting odds are showing it is likely to pick up its third consecutive award this year. However, you won’t know for sure until the winner is announced at the ceremony.
