Who is Viktor Gyokeres?
Viktor Gyokeres is a Swedish international striker who began his career at IF Brommapojkarna, scoring 20 times in 56 appearances. The 27-year-old was signed by Brighton, although he was never given the opportunity by the Seagulls and was send out on loan to St. Pauli, Swansea and Coventry City. He did enough during his spell in the Championship to merit a permanent move to Coventry and subsequently netted 38 goals in 91 appearances. Sporting CP shelled out a club-record fee to secure his services and it proved to be a worthwhile gamble with Gyokeres helping them to two consecutive titles.

Playing Style
As his recent record testifies, Gyokeres is a natural goalscorer, although he has taken plenty of time to find his range and is still occasionally guilty of spurning decent opportunities. The Swede is a powerful runner and is effective at winning aerial duels. As well as scoring frequently, he also claimed eight assists for Sporting CP this season and is happy to supply his teammates with ammunition. He can use his body to shield the ball and is also perfectly comfortable at running the channels. He has enough pace and power to thrive in one-on-one situations and is happy with the ball at his feet. He plays short passes and his size allows him to win fouls frequently, helping to alleviate the pressure on his team’s defence.
Likely Destinations
Although Sporting CP are a big deal in Portugal, they aren’t regarded as one of the European heavyweights and at 27, Gyokeres clearly fancies testing himself at a higher level. He has already experienced living in the UK and would be unlikely to need much time to settle into his new surroundings should he need to return to England.
A reunion with his former boss Ruben Amorim at Manchester United was touted as a possibility and this may still happen, however, the Red Devils may need to offload some of their high-earners before being able to justify his wage demands. Furthermore, a 15th placed finish last season and a lack of European football has seemingly counted them out of the race, putting Arsenal firmly back in the driving seat.
Arsenal finished second in the Premier League and are looking to strengthen once again this summer. Mikel Arteta’s side are also eyeing up a move for Benjamin Sesko. Reports suggest that the Emirates is his preferred destination and he could be available for around £70m. The Gunners are desperate to end their title drought this season having finished second to Liverpool in 2024-25.
Juventus have entered the race and are believed to be happy to match Gyokeres’ eye-watering wage demands. The Old Lady will be required to offload a number of high-earners to fund the move including Dusan Vlahovic, Filip Kostic and potentially, former Bournemouth defender Lloyd Kelly.
The Biaconeri also have other options with Randal Kolo Muani and Jonathon David also linked with moves to Turin.
PSG have also shown an interest in the in-form striker and although they are otherwise engaged in the Club World Cup, the Parisiens undoubtedly have the finances to compete and can almost guarantee silverware.
