Why is the documentary choosing to follow Wrexham?

Welcome to Wrexham was created by Disney following the takeover of hollywood duo Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. Prior to their arrival, the historic club, which is located in a working-class town in North Wales, had been stuck in the fifth tier of the English football pyramid for over a decade and the team’s future was looking fairly perilous, particularly financially.

Part of the documentary’s charm is the unlikely marriage between Hollywood and North Wales with the first season focusing on the potential new owner’s bid to win approval from the club’s Supporter’s Trust.

Having missed out on the play-offs under previous manager Dean Keates, the series also highlighted the arrival of new manager Phil Parkinson and a significant churn in playing staff.

More Recent Series

Having seen their attendance swell as a result of the documentary, the club have recently recorded their biggest attendance in over 44 years and those numbers look set to increase in the second tier.

As well as covering back-to-back promotions, the series also focuses on the club’s journey to the EFL Trophy final at Wembley.

The fourth series of the documentary was released on May 16th, 2025 and followed the club’s bid for promotion from League One, the third tier. Covering a dramatic battle for second place with promotion hanging in the balance before being secured in the final couple of weeks of the season.

The eight episodes cover a range of emotions, culminating in unrelenting joy with the club managing to secure promotion to the Championship. One of the most notable aspects of this show, alongside the narrative, is the range of emotions covered, including several scenes which highlight what the recent success of the club means to the long-serving supporters, hard-working club staff and down-at-heel locals.
