Tour De France 2025: Will Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard dominate the race once again?
The Tour de France is always one of the most anticipated events in the sporting calendar, and for fans of competitive cycling, it is the pinnacle. Having first taken place in 1903, it is widely recognised as the world’s biggest multi-day sport, and it takes place on an annual basis. Although the multi-stage race is largely held within French territory, it has been known to visit other countries, with Spain, Belgium and the UK all featuring at some point in the last decade. Future editions of the race are already planned for both Barcelona and Edinburgh.
It is the oldest, grandest and most notable of three Grand Tours, which include the Giro d’Italia and Veulta a Espana.

The Big Rivalry
The major narrative of this year’s race will be the intense rivalry between last year’s champion Tadej Pogacar and previous winner Jonas Vingegaard. They have shared the last four editions of the race between them and they are both expected to be fighting it out for top honours once again.
Pogacar completed the historic Grand Tour double and is undoubtedly at the peak of his powers. He is understandably favourite to go back-to-back at the Tour De France. Riding for the UAE Emirates Team, the Slovenian won six stages last year, which is the most since Eddy Merckx back in 1974 and a strong showing at the Dauphine suggests that his form isn’t likely to drop off anytime soon.
Jonas Vingegaard has won two of the last renewals of this race and will be looking to add to his impressive list of successes. He pushed his rival all the way last season and has shown a fantastic determination to succeed, despite suffering a few injury setbacks. The Dane’s preparations have been relatively infrequent so far this campaign and there are questions over his fitness, however, he has consistently defied expectations and hasn’t finished lower than second in any of his previous five appearance at Grand Tour events.
Other Notable Participants
Although he is someway behind the main two riders in the race, Remco Evenepoel must get an honourable mention. The Belgian will be looking to close the gap on the leaders and improve his time from last year. The Olympic Gold Medallist, who is riding for WorldTeam Soudal-Quick-Step is a super time trialist and is the two-time UCI World Champion.
Joao Almeida‘s 2025 form cannot be ignored either with the Spaniard having already secured three WorldTour stage events and although he will need to be at the peak of his powers to usurp the top two in the betting, he is undoubtedly a rider to keep an eye on.
Primoz Roglic may still be seeking his first yellow jersey, however, he’s come devastatingly close to winning the Tour de France on a couple of occasions and should possess enough quality to push his fellow Slovenian all the way. The 35-year-old is in decent form, but whether he has quite enough to put himself in the elite bracket remains to be seen.
